BET’s Real World spin off is back for a sixth season, this time in South Florida. The cast of eight typically attends historically black colleges or universities. However, this season all cast mates come from different areas of Florida as well as different schools only to find themselves together in South Beach.
With a different location and a different cast, one factor is slightly familiar. Remember our fellow Gator, Greg Halstead, better known as “the chosen one”, from the Real World: Hollywood cast? Another University of Florida student, Terri Arcelia Darden, is in full effect making her presence known from the beginning. Among her, there are her cast mates Brandon, Tiffany, Paul, Allison, Chris, Milan and Kyle.
For some reason this show has some strange appeal to audiences. What is the College Hill “craze” is all about? Is it the fact that black college students are finally represented through reality television, like our very own Real World? Or do we just like to see people play out their roles for the camera while you hardly ever see or hear about them actually being students? It’s all well and good to show black college students, but what exactly are they doing? They go to class, supposedly, and then they party, create drama and get rewarded with trips to Key West. Pardon me if I am a little misguided, but I don’t believe the actual college experience is being captured. I mean, you rarely even see them on a college campus. What happened to the good old seasons of College Hill when there were students from one school, put together in a house by their campus and who played out their normal lives?
Apparently, all a successful College Hill cast needs is a pretty boy or two, the awkward kid who tries to fit in, one gay or bisexual person and the black female with a witch attitude. Not to imply that this is a general pattern, but the most watched College Hill seasons have somewhat followed suit.
This season the drama began with two girls going after the “pretty boy” while one of the girl’s infatuation seemed to grow a bit too quickly. Terri not only had her Brandon (pretty boy) drama, but she and Milan didn’t play nice either. The threatening, throwing of objects and gripped pool stick portrayed Terri as if she was the aggressor when Milan suddenly threw the first blow. Instead of production choosing who is to stay or leave, the cast members were allowed to vote off a cast member -- which in turn ensued more drama and created a drift within the house. Terri’s so-called closest friend within the house, Kyle, chose to vote her off and chose Milan to stay.
I don’t think UF student’s have luck with reality television, but don’t, worry we are not all calling ourselves “the chosen ones” or threatening people with pool sticks.
Unfortunately, Terri could not be reached for an interview, but hopefully during the College Hill Reunion Show will be able to explain her actions and side of the story. As far as the present cast, a new member was added in Terri’s absence. Let’s hope she makes friends because apparently if you get into a fight, it doesn’t matter who threw the first punch.
